Day of the Dead

Whose life do you celebrate today?

I recently had the opportunity to share a few of my stories and thoughts on grief at the Chequamegon Unitarian Universalist Fellowship service dedicated to honoring those who have left this earth. It was a powerful service, not because of my words, but to hear others light a candle in honor of those they love. It reminded me yet again of how universal grief is and the power of storytelling.

Later, I was listening to Hamilton in the car. I’m a little late to the game but seriously, one of the best musicals I’ve ever heard.

The song, Who lives, Who dies, Who tells your story came on and I couldn’t help but think about the impact we and our stories have on other people. The role we play in other people’s lives that we may or may not even know about and how our legacy lives on in them.

Telling my story of grief was incredibly difficult for me. I’m introverted, socially awkward, and anxious about public speaking of any kind. But I’m glad I did it. I’m glad I get to share stories about the people who have changed my life.

So if you are struggling with grief, I hope this message helps. And if not, I hope you find a way to share your story with others, in hopes of helping yourself.
